48 Ind. Fair Victims Sue Sugarland Over Collapse

First Published: November 22, 2011 11:34 PM EST Credit: Getty Images INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Caption Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland attend the 45th annual CMA Awards at the Bridgestone Arena, Nashville, on November 9, 2011 Country duo Sugarland was named in a lawsuit filed Tuesday by 44 survivors of the Indiana State Fair stage collapse and family members of four people who died, by far the largest claim yet stemming from the tragedy. Attorneys representing at least 20 law firms across Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky filed the complaint alleging breach of reasonable care to the victims in Marion Superior Court in Indianapolis. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages from Sugarland, producers, stage riggers and others associated with the Dec. 13 show. Stage rigging collapsed into spectators following a wind gust of at least 60 mph, killing seven people and injuring more than 40 others. Sugarland had not yet taken the stage when the collapse occurred. Sugarlands contract specified the act had the final say on whether to cancel the concert due to weather, plaintiffs attorney Mario Massillamany of Logansport said in a news release. Unfortunately, this tragedy could have been prevented if the responsible parties had been concerned about the concertgoers that night, Massillamany said. The contract reached between Sugarlands agent, Creative Artists Agency, and the Indiana State Fair Committee guaranteed the duo $300,500 to perform, $34,500 for sound, lights and catering, and 85 percent of gross box office receipts over $470,000, Massillamany said. This is a devastating tragedy that has impacted hundreds of people, plaintiffs so-counsel Scott Starr said. It is critical to help the victims pay the medical bills and other financial expenses that they have incurred from this incident. The plaintiffs include Lisa Hite of Cass County, who was with her 8-year-old custodial granddaughter in the area immediately in front of the stage called the Sugar Pit. The injuries I sustained have left me unable to provide for my family. The financial and emotional strain this has caused has left a lasting impact on my family, said Hite, who is represented by Starr and Massillamany. Sugarlands publicist didnt immediately return a call Tuesday seeking comment. The complaint charges that Sugarland and the other entities owed a duty to provide a safe concert environment and use reasonable care in the direction, set-up and supervision of the concert. The complaint does not name the fair or the state of Indiana among the defendants. They were named separately in at least 40 tort claims filed with the attorney generals office. Indiana law caps the states liability for damages from the incident at $5 million. A separate State Fair Remembrance Fund has paid about $564,000 to 28 people, and the remaining $400,000 in the state-administered fund will be paid out on a prorated basis to people who have already received money, State Fair Commission chairman Andre Lacy said Monday. Fair officials said another 28 people applied for aid but were turned down. At least two other lawsuits on behalf of other victims of the stage collapse have been filed against Sugarland and other defendants. Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Michelle Yeoh Garners Praise at AFI Fest for 'The Lady'

Michelle Yeoh Garners Praise at AFI Fest for 'The Lady' By Scott Feinberg November 8, 2011 Photo by Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images Michelle Yeoh Whenever you request people in the ongoing 25th annual AFI Fest to title their highlights from the festival, probably the most common reactions is Luc Besson's "The Woman,Inch which tested because an AFI Focal point Gala selection on Friday, almost two several weeks after its world premiere in rough-cut form in the Toronto Worldwide Film Festival (where I first viewed it and also the Cohen Media Group guaranteed its U.S. distribution privileges). The main reason to determine "The WomanInch -- a moving biopic of Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese opposition leader who resided under house arrest for 15 from the 21 years before her release this year, and who had been granted the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize (in absentia) "on her non-violent struggle for democracy and human privileges" -- is Michelle Yeoh, the 49-year-old Malaysian actress who provides the best performance of her career as Suu Kyi and today comes with an outdoors shot of snagging a best actress Oscar jerk on her efforts. As Yeoh and that i talked about throughout a comprehensive interview in Los Angeles on Friday, it's somewhat ironic that they was cast as Suu Kyi, because the leader is notoriously peaceful, whereas the actress has, for many of her 27-year career, focused on action.Yeoh was a proficient dancer and athlete before a back injuries along with a meddlesome mother brought her to test modeling. She was joined in to the Miss Malaysia contest, won, and therefore caught the eye from the great Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan, who asked her to look with him inside a commercial. Soon after that, she was cast in her own first movie like a typical "damsel in distress," however when her co-workers discovered her physical prowess she was handed a opportunity to perform couple of stunts of her very own. It rapidly grew to become obvious that they was just as gifted as her male alternatives -- in many cases even much more -- and she or he was, before lengthy, probably the most popular and greatest-compensated female star of Hong Kong cinema. (In the past few years, Rotten Tomato plants named her the very best action heroine of all-some time and Quentin Tarantino begged her to have an audience.)Given Yeoh's striking beauty and talent, it had been basically inevitable that Hollywood would eventually come calling. It had been not inevitable, though, it happens in the manner it did, in the mid-the nineteen nineties: by having an offer to experience a Bond girl opposite Pierce Brosnan's 007 in Roger Spottiswoode's "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997). Yeoh, who's notoriously selective if this involves selecting parts, required on that one only after she was assured that it might be a brand new type of Bond girl -- someone who isn't just eye-chocolate, but who are able to psychologically and physically go foot-to-foot using the secret agent. This Bond film, like several of individuals within the franchise, would be a tremendous commercial success, but unlike most of the others it had been particularly celebrated by women, who cheered Yeoh's portrayal. The actress might have remained within the U.S. to take advantage of her newly found worldwide fame -- and, indeed, she received plenty of impressive offers, for example starring roles in "The Matrix" sequels. But she chosen to consider a while off -- 3 years, to be precise -- to wait for a right part. She chose sensibly, because the film by which she eventually came back, Ang Lee's Chinese action-thriller "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2000), would be a triumphant success, becoming the greatest-grossing language film in American background and generating 10 Oscar nominations, including one for the best picture.Since that time, Yeoh has divided her time between Asian cinema along with a choose couple of American films. She looks half her age but still seems to stay in tip-top condition, but, recently, has started to stear clear in the action genre in support of character-focused dramas, for example Take advantage of Marshall's "Memoirs of the Geisha" (2005) and today "The Woman.Inch The latter film offered her an opportunity to not just play but meet her "hero," Suu Kyi, and her performance boosts the bar with an already impressive career even greater.According to her history, though, I wouldn't place it past her to operate, jump, and kick her way regarding this within the a long time. It rapidly grew to become obvious that they was just as gifted as her male alternatives -- oftentimes even much more -- and she or he was, before lengthy, typically the most popular and greatest-compensated female star of Hong Kong cinema. (Recently, Rotten Tomato plants named her the very best action heroine of-some time and Quentin Tarantino begged her to have an audience.)Given Yeoh's striking beauty and talent, it had been basically inevitable that Hollywood would eventually come calling. It had been not inevitable, though, it happens in the manner it did, within the mid-the nineteen nineties: by having an offer to experience a Bond girl opposite Pierce Brosnan's 007 in Roger Spottiswoode's "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997). The actress might have remained within the U.S. to take advantage of her newly found worldwide fame -- and, indeed, she received lots of impressive offers, for example starring roles in "The Matrix" sequels. But she chosen to consider a while off -- 3 years, more specifically -- to wait for a right part. She chose sensibly, since the film by which she eventually came back, Ang Lee's Chinese action-thriller "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2000), would be a triumphant success, becoming the greatest-grossing language film in American background and generating 10 Oscar nominations, including one for the best picture.Since that time, Yeoh has divided her time between Asian cinema along with a choose couple of American films. She looks half her age but still seems to stay in tip-top condition, but, recently, has started to be put off by the experience genre in support of character-focused dramas, for example Take advantage of Marshall's "Memoirs of the Geisha" (2005) and today "The Woman.Inch The second film offered her an opportunity to not just play but meet her "hero," Suu Kyi, and her performance boosts the bar with an already impressive career even greater.According to her history, though, I wouldn't place it past her to operate, jump, and kick her way regarding this within the a long time. 'Tower' looking for B.O. power

Puss in Boots is likely to take second place at the U.S. B.O. Appealing to several demos, Universals PG-13 rated Tower Heist is expected to bow between $25 million and $30 million. A pair of comedies, "Tower Heist" and "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas," look to brighten the mood at what has been a fairly glum boxoffice climate in recent weeks.Universal's PG-13 ensemble laffer "Tower Heist" is expected to bow between $25 million and $30 million through Sunday, while New Line's third "Harold & Kumar" installment, distribbed by Warner Bros., should land in the high-teens, according to B.O. pundits. Both wide releases will have to fight against a recent moviegoing slump, though "Tower Heist" has the advantage of appealing to a broader aud. "Harold & Kumar" may struggle to break out beyond its core under-25 male demo.Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn" should continue to dominate overseas. Last weekend, the 3D motion-capture pic debuted in 19 international territories, nearly two months before its U.S. bow on Dec. 21, with a stellar $56.6 million via distribs Sony and Paramount. Pic expands this weekend to Russia.Overseas auds have also supported Par-DreamWorks Animation's "Puss in Boots," which bowed last weekend with $17.2 million. Domestically, the toon should hold well enough for second place, with a soph-sesh take projected at around $22 million, or a 35% weekend-to-weekend drop. The weekend's players won't match last year's record November kickoff set by new entries "Megamind," "Due Date" and "For Colored Girls."U said tracking for "Tower Heist" is similar to "Due Date," which opened with $32.7 million, though the current slowdown at the turnstiles has tempered expectations."Tower Heist," which launches today at 3,367 locations, made headlines early last month when U announced it would make the film available via a limited premium video-on-demand platform just three weeks after its theatrical bow. The studio tabled the plan after exhib Cinemark threatened to boycott the pic.Budgeted at a reported $85 million, "Tower Heist" also is launching this weekend in 25 overseas markets, including Germany, Spain and the U.K."Harold & Kumar" cost significantly less than "Tower," with a budget in the low-$30 millions. But the R-rated laffer is more of a wildcard, since under-25 filmgoers have been AWOL from plexes lately."We're somewhere between 'Kick-Ass' and 'Jackass,' " quipped Warner Bros. domestic distribution chief Dan Fellman.Last year, Par's "Jackass 3D" scored the highest-ever October bow ($50.4 million), though that was topped last month by another younger-skewing franchise offering, "Paranormal Activity 3," with $52.6 million. Lionsgate's "Kick-Ass" bowed at $19.8 million last April.Like "Jackass 3D," New Line's latest "Harold & Kumar" pic could benefit from the stoner franchise's popularity among young males. Warner is releasing the film at 2,875 locations, with 2,943 3D screens and roughly 1,000 midnight showtimes on Thursday. In limited release, Anchor Bay bows Sundance pickup "The Son of No One," toplining Channing Tatum and Al Pacino, at 10 U.S. playdates.Sony's "Anonymous," which opened last weekend to a respectable $3,856 per-screen average from 265 locations, broadens to 513, while the Weinstein Co. is re-releasing Holocaust drama "Sarah's Key" at 318 theaters. AOL this morning reported third-quarter revenue of $531.7 million, down 6% from a year ago but marking the lowest level of decline in five years. A loss of $2.6 million, or 2 cents a share, also beat Wall Street projections as the company saw year-over-year gains in global advertising revenue, which included a 28% boost in third-party ads and a 15% rise in display — it’s the second consecutive quarter of gains in global ad revenue.”We continue to build strong consumer experiences as we execute our strategy to build the premium branded media company for the Internet,” CEO Tim Armstrong said in announcing the earnings this morning. “Our share repurchases underlie our belief in the value of AOL and our strategy.” Still, search and contextual ads fell 15% year-over-year and overall ad revenue at AOL properties only increased 1% to $221.8 million despite the additions of The Huffington Post and TechCrunch. Expect Armstrong to be asked during AOL’s call with analysts about those figures as well as rumors of a tie-up with Yahoo, a move he says would save the company $1 billion-$1.5 billion and shore up its ad message to agencies.

Steven Spielberg Proud of Fourth 'Indiana Jones' Movie Criticisms

Mandel Ngan/AFP/Getty Images Steven Spielberg says he's proud that the phrase "nuked the fridge" has replaced "jumped the shark" as the shorthand for saying a film series has taken a turn for the worse.our editor recommendsSteven Spielberg and Peter Jackson: The Titans Behind 'The Adventures of Tintin'VIDEO: Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson 'The Adventures of Tintin' Talking to Empire magazine about his career, the director of the upcoming Adventures of Tintin and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull says even though people blame producer George Lucas for the scene where Indy hides in a refrigerator to avoid a nuclear explosion, the idea was really his. "Blame me. Don't blame George. That was my silly idea. People stopped saying 'jump the shark'. They now say, 'nuked the fridge'. I'm proud of that. I'm glad I was able to bring that into popular culture." PHOTOS: Steven Spielberg on Set However, Spielberg is not as proud of the aliens that appear at the end of the film. "I sympathize with people who didn't like the MacGuffin because I never liked the MacGuffin. George and I had big arguments about the MacGuffin. I didn't want these things to be either aliens or inter-dimensional beings. But I am loyal to my best friend. When he writes a story he believes in -- even if I don't believe in it -- I'm going to shoot the movie the way George envisaged it. I'll add my own touches, I'll bring my own cast in, I'll shoot the way I want to shoot it, but I will always defer to George as the storyteller of the Indy series. I will never fight him on that." Spielberg says he doesn't know the status of a possible fifth Indiana Jones movie. He's waiting to hear from Lucas, who has long had the task of figuring out the story before he approaches Spielberg. "George is in charge of breaking the stories. He's done it on all four movies. Whether I like the stories or not, George has broken all the stories. He is working on Indy V. We haven't gone to screenplay yet, but he's working on the story. I'll leave it to George to come up with a good story." Steven Spielberg

Help Movieline Caption This Dark Shadows Photo of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton

We may have one Johnny Depp adaptation fast approaching (The Rum Diary opens in theaters October 28), but that doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten about the other Johnny Depp adaptation down the line. Dark Shadows, the actor’s next and eighth collaboration with Tim Burton will bring the forgotten ’60s goth soap opera of the same name to life. Although it isn’t due out until May 2012, Empire does have a sneak peak of the behind-the-scenes action. Do you have your captioning pens handy? Good, because here is a photo of Depp in full bloody character make-up as Burton directs him. Depp plays Barnabas Collins, an 18th century vampire who awakens to find himself in the 20th century. The supernatural drama also stars Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Johnny Lee Miller, Chlo Moretz and, of course, Helena Bonham Carter. Like the original series that aired on ABC, Burton’s Dark Shadows will also feature werewolves, warlocks, witches, zombies, and time travel. Oh my! But enough about the cast, let’s get to captioning. Ready, set, go! For a few other Dark Shadows photos, visit Empire Online. [via Empire Online]

'Gypsy' is Slovak Oscar entry

PRAGUE -- Martin Sulik's "Gypsy" continues to be posted for Oscar foreign-lingo consideration through the Slovak Film and tv Academy. The approaching-of-age tale in regards to a 14-year-old Roma youth has won over major regional experts, scoring a unique jury prize and honors for leading actor Jan Mizigar in the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in This summer. Additionally, it performed at Toronto. The film clearly touched local auds, generating, based on producer Rudolf Biermann, an believed $270,000 -- a hefty total for any small country with less than 20 multiplexes. Gypsy," and will be offering a tale and figures that appear to possess universal appeal, wasn't intended as commercial fare, stated Sulik, who desired to capture the existence of Roma individuals who face deep suspicion and systematic marginalization in Slovakia. For your reason he was adamant that his figures speak Romany. "I'd an interpreter by my side the entire time," Sulik stated. Many Slovaks have no knowledge about Roma culture, Sulik added, "because other product comes near interest. We desired to initiate some discussion of the problem. I believe this discussion is beginning gradually." Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

Carre blanc

A Solair Films production in colaboration with Tarantula. (Worldwide sales: Coach 14, Paris.) Produced by Benjamin Mamou, Jean-Baptiste Leonetti. Executive producer, Camille Havard Bourdon. Co-producers, Ernest Rouschop, Xavier Ruiz, Alexander Rodnyansky. Directed, put together by Jean-Baptiste Leonetti. With: Sami Bouajila, Julie Gayet, Jean-Pierre Andreani, Carlos Leal, Dominique Paturel, Fejria Deliba, Valerie Bodson, Viviana Aliberti, Majid Hives, Adele Exarchopoulos, Nathalie Becue Prader. (French dialogue)A prominent film website describes the premise of "Carre blanc" thus: "Afterwards, society's weak are destroyed and useful for meat." That is each one of these helluva false assumption, or it's symptomatic of author-director Jean-Baptiste Leonetti's excessively cryptic debut feature, because this kind of major conceptual point is barely even suggested onscreen. Bleak, minimalist dystopian sci-fi a la "1984" and "THX-1138," pic epitomizes the carefully thought-out aesthetic package with almost zero fascination with narrative and audience engagement. Adventurous genre fans will uncover it via disc or download a few will probably be rapt, many bored. As children, Philippe (Sami Bouajila) and Marie (Julie Gayet) met when she saved him from undertaking suicide as his mother had. 20 years later, he's end up being the perfect controlling tool from the all-pervasive corporation, posting subordinates to psychologically and/or physically harmful tests they can't possibly pass, while she laments their childlessness and also the behavior for the consuming machine. An initially striking, obtuse objet d'art, "Carre Blanc" soon evolves turgid while you realizes the specific, sterile visual and ominous audio tactics are that's prone to "happen."Camera (color, HD), David Nissen editors, Alex Rodriguez, Eric Jacquemin music, Evgueni Galperine production designers, Marie Pierre Durand, Noelle Van Parijs. Actors and Actresses Who Give Back to Their Community

You may think all Hollywood stars do is sip champagne and bathe in tubs filled with $100 bills, but there are some out there who use their fame for the greater good. In the latest issue of The Hollywood Reporter, the magazine looks at the actors and actresses who are making a difference. Take for instance Kristin Davis, who recently took a trip as an Oxfam International ambassador to Africa, where she visited refugee camps in Kenya. The 46-year-old actress is also a board member of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which rescues orphaned elephants. Matthew McConaughey and wife Camile Alves are doing their part by supporting after-school fitness programs through their j.k. livin foundation, along with Hilary Duff, who is the sole supporter of Normandie Avenue Elementary's Blessing in a Backpack nonprofit, which assists low-income families with nonperishable food. Gabrielle Union, Hailee Steinfeld and Sarah Hyland are also among those who are giving back. Now we're sure their are plenty of movie stars who don't help out on the non-profit side. So, the lesson here is only bad mouth the actors who don't contribute. [via THR]

Ousted OWN CEO Christina Norman Lands at AOL Huffington Post Media Group

NEW YORK - After being ousted from her post as CEO of OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network in May, Christina Norman has taken on the role of executive editor of Black Voices, a new site that the AOL Huffington Post Media Group is expected to launch later this week, and will also develop content and video for the whole group, a spokesman confirmed Monday. PaidContent had first reported Norman's role earlier on Monday, saying that she will kick off her new job with a Huffington Post essay about the circumstances of her departure from OWN. "It's a great lesson for women, that when one door closes, another one opens," the site quoted Arianna Huffington, president and editor-in-chief of the AOL Huffington Post Media Group, as saying. "There is enormous pressure on high-profile women to succeed, to constantly prove themselves. I met Christina in Los Angeles when she was the head of OWN. After she left, I asked her if she wanted to do something completely different." In a Web post on Monday that announced the launch of HuffPost Women and HuffPost PArents, Huffington said she would write more about Black Voices later in the week. Norman was president of MTV prior to leading OWN. Mixed ratings momentum in its early going following its January launch led to her departure. After she left, Discovery Communications COO Peter Liguori stepped in as interim CEO. Last month, it emerged that Oprah Winfrey herself will add the CEO and chief creative officer titles at OWN. "We know football fans are hungry for compelling NFL programming and we think they'll love the 10th anniversary special," said Rick Bernstein, executive producer at HBO Sports. "The first 10 years of Hard Knocks has been the ultimate fly-on-the-wall NFL training camp experience. We look forward to taking a look back at those shows and reintroducing the fans to those characters who made the decade of Hard Knocks so memorable," said Steve Sabol, president of NFL Films. Stu then has an epiphany and the group of 3 rushes back to the hotel and discover Teddy in the elevator unhurt (albeit still missing a finger). Teddy had woken up in the middle of the night time to get more ice for his severed finger (after the primary bucket of ice had melted) but became trapped after the ability went out. The 4 use Chow's speedboat, the keys for which were in Teddy's pocket, to journey back to the wedding reception. Arriving simply as Lauren's father is about to cancel the wedding, Stu makes a defiant speech where he rejects being boring and instead states that he is in reality fairly wild. Impressed, Lauren's father gives the couple his blessing. After the wedding continues on, Alan presents Stu with a special gift at the publish-reception dance: a musical visitor performance by Mike Tyson. Teddy later detects that he had taken many photos through the night time on his cell phone. As soon as once more, the group, together with Tyson, agree to look at the pictures collectively as soon as before erasing the proof of their exploits. The screen goes black because the group (in reply to the primary film) exclaim in shock to the images (which, identical to the primary film, play over the final point credits).
